Polish Coldwave · Zimna Fala 2

jarocin-thumbAfter my first article about Polish coldwave/zimna fala (One Million Bulgarians, Psychoformalina, Made in Poland, Madame) I got a lot of positive feedback from you. At this point I would like to express my gratitude for that. I was also reminded that I forgot some of the important coldwave bands from Poland, which is true.

As a non-native speaker of Polish language (it is said to be one of the most difficult to learn, I can confirm that) it is not always easy to understand, what’s written about those great bands, and even harder to find the ‘insider’ music, but with the help of some of my readers from Poland I found out about three bands I want to write about in the following: Wieże Fabryk, Joanna Makabresku and Aya Rl. The Overheard Songs

overheard-thumbYoung Mick Jagger once said he would rather die before still playing ‘Satisfaction’ live when being 60. Many bands had a real hit in their history, by which they are measured ever after. This can be very annoying for a musician. Also new wave spawned a couple of stereotypical songs. But these bands’ hits are most likely to shade their other oeuvre and one or the other gem has been just ‘over-heard’. Read More →

What happened to… Venus in Furs?

times_intro

By chance I found an old vinyl a few years ago at a flea-market. I never heard of the band before. Nonetheless, the cover was appealing to me and so I bought it. For quite some time the LP was laying around in my room, I forgot about it, until one Sunday evening I played for the first time, what soon after and till today would become one of my favourite bands.

There was always something mysterious about Venus in Furs, as there is hardly any information available. On the music portal LastFM the entry of Venus in Furs is mostly occupied by a fictional band of the same name as appeared on the soundtrack to Velvet Goldmine. Read More →

Interview · The Living Jarboe

The Living JarboeOctober 2012 a friend of mine told me that Jarboe, former member of trouble-making band Swans, was performing in Ljubljana’s alternative quarter Metelkova. Of course, I did not hesitate to go there, expecting a wonderful concert experience. Swans were one of my favourite music groups for years and I especially liked the records where Jarboe was singing. Her voice is alongside Elisabeth Fraser’s from Cocteau Twins one of the most amazing in post-punk/new wave. Read More →

What is Steampunk?

“Brought together by combining old and new, it is a great example
of how we humans aspire to create” (Harrington 2011: 8).

While steampunk is already widely known and partly acknowledged by the public in the USA, its recognition in Europe is pending. This does not imply that there are no people trying to make it more popular throughout Europe. It has potential to become the “next big thing” in popular culture.

“Steampunk is a time that never was, but one we wish that had been” (G4 Underground 2009) – as such ‘Captain’ Robert Brown, founder and front-man of the steampunk band Abney Park, describes, what is the essence of steampunk. This sentence reveals already a lot, it says that steampunk is about a certain time in the past, more precisely, the future vision of a certain past, an alternative time-line. Read More →

Nostalgia

nostalgia_thumbSpending New Year’s 2013 in Berlin, a city, where I had an amazing time some years ago, I was confronted with my own past. I visited places, bars, streets and the like, where I used to hang around. I drank the beer from ‘back then’ and even smoked the allegedly no longer available Nil cigarettes. Read More →

Ear-Worms · Songs that get stuck in our heads

20051118_ohrwurmWho doesn’t know this feeling, a certain melody playing continuously inside your head and there is no way of getting it out of your consciousness.

This can be a really annoying thing if your head tells you over and over that ‘I’m a big big girl in a big big world’ or that somebody broke your heart last Christmas (finally the heart breaking season is over for some time now). But, perhaps the worst ear-worm is the desperately hopeful assumption that ‘tonight’s gonna be a good night’ combined with the Sonic the Hedgehog theme. Read More →
