A Musical Review of 2016

2016

2016 was in many ways a strange year that will most likely become a marker of big changes, like 1989. We were facing severe geopolitical and sociological changes and lost a whole series of inspiring people like David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Greg Lake and Pete Burns.

But there were also moments of light in 2016. Considering new music it was, actually, great. Like every year I compiled a list of extraordinary songs for you – in no particular order. Read More →

First Interview with Black Pond

bp

I am very honoured to have today the possibility to chat with two very important music protagonists who are involved actively and passively in the wave movement since the 1980s:
Jeff Gallea from California, known as mastermind behind darkwave/synthpop project Eleven Pond (1986-1987), which he reformed in 2011 due to rising interest of contemporary music fans in their back-then only album ‘Bas Relief’ (1987) – by now this album gained cult-status. Beta Evers from Germany, who has founded several music labels – Kommando 6, Bodyvolt, Venus Noir – and is known for her solo efforts in synth-based music as well as for collaborations with other musicians.

One of these collaborations recently caught my attention, namely the EP ‘Chasms’ by Black Pond which is the common project of Beta and Jeff. Their next record ‘Deepest Chasms’ (Electronic Emergencies) is scheduled for December 5th 2016 – in a few days – which makes this the perfect moment for a little talk. Please enjoy with me the first-ever official interview with Black Pond! Read More →

Savetier’s New Wave Journey

europeanghostJuly 2016 – finally I could make my dream come true: Travel to Northern Italy and meet all the great bands, about which I have been writing for years, in person. Through these I also got to know other musicians from that region.

On July 16th I picked up Cyrene in Ljubljana and together we started our road-trip towards Bologna. The next seven days were filled with meeting fascinating people and listening to their awesome stories. We enjoyed the company of Caron Dimonio, Two Moons, European Ghost, Temple of Venus, BeStrass, Dade City Days, Schonwald/Shad Shadows, Tetrolugosi, Modern Blossom and The Black Veils. The result is the following recording of over an hour. Nothing was scripted, you will see the musicians how they really are. Enjoy! Read More →

Stories Around Music

volkova-postcard

Founded in 2013, it didn’t take the Argentinian duo Vólkova a long time to become part of the peak in alternative electronic music. Also in Europe they gained foot easily, proven by a successful tour in 2014. In 2015 the duo will have concerts all around Europe again. On the ridge between minimal wave, industrial and electroclash Vólkova are critically acclaimed throughout the continent – which they very well deserve!

Vólkova are Paula Lazzarino (vocals and lyrics) and Cesar Canali (music). During a nice little talk Paula and Cesar revealed some facts of their band’s history, why they have a connection to Slovenia and how they like it in Europe. Read More →

Fresh Music Supply

ashcode-live

Lately I have been quite busy and didn’t find much time to write some articles on theses pages. This shall change now. Finally, I owe you some news on music.

Firstly, Hungarian minimal wave artist Ádám Bérces, Slovakian goth-punks Hysteric Helen finally released their debut albums. I am already quite busy writing some reviews and will keep you, of course, informed, when they will be published.

Minimal artist ZX Electric released his second album Fixed Unknown, a review on this you can find here. Italian darkwavers Christine Plays Viola were also busy and revealed to us their new masterpiece Vacua.

In the following I will present you some new singles and bands, which you might enjoy. Read More →

What happened to… Dark White?

darkwhite

When synthesizers became a good available for the average man in the the early 80s, it suddenly was so easy to make music without a band. It was the prime time of one-man-projects. Since the punk movement D.I.Y. was in trend. New wave brought us some interesting music, which only got its name 20 years later: Minimal wave. You just needed a synth, a drum machine and a nuance of creativity.

A very mysterious project from the mid-80s is called Dark White. Only one release we have got from them, The Grey Area, self-released in 1985 (Dark White Music) with not more than 500 copies. Also an intensive internet research didn’t reveal much about Dark White. Read More →

A Musical Review of 2013

review2014

Another year is almost over, with all its highs and lows. Lou Reed and Nelson Mandela died, there’s a new pope, in Turkey and Ukraine people go on the streets to protest against their governments and Russia does everything to reload the Cold War. But enough about politics.

This page almost has its first birthday, the blog went online on January 2nd 2013. In the last year the page almost got 20.000 views and has an average of 53 visitors per day, which is a great outcome. I want to thank the musicians, artists and writers, who helped me make this project real, and, of course, my friends and readers for their interest, inspiration and support. savetier.eu is a non-profit site (maybe once I will place ads/banners somewhere, but for now I don’t know where they would fit and they are mostly ugly).

This year again I prepared a list of 10 great songs that were released in 2013. As always in no particular order. Read More →

The Sounds of Romania

transsylvania_sun

Why is it that people from Western and Central Europe tend to over-see Eastern Europe? Is it the languages? In this English-dominated world many are less exposed to Eastern European languages. People seeking the exotic go far away to Africa and Southern America, but have maybe never been to Poland, Romania, Slovakia etc. But these countries are everything else than grey and boring.

A few months ago I have been the first time to Romania, namely in the cities of Suceava (Bucovina) and Cluj Napoca (Transsylvania). It was a very nice experience to finally visit the place, about which I have read lots of books during my whole life.

Regarding Romanian new wave music I was a complete newbie. Something I intend to change hereby. I researched what the Romanian music scene has to offer and was quite surprised by the amount of great bands. Ten of these bands especially caught my attention and shall be presented in the following.  Read More →

The Sounds of Slovenia

ljubljana

Since almost four years I have been living now in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. For a small country with a population of 2 million people the music scene is quite vivid. When I moved here I was surprised by the amount of concerts and venues.

Maybe the most known musical export from Slovenia is the legendary group Laibach. With their provocative style they have gained international reputation and influenced many other bands, most notably Rammstein. Another known act from Slovenia is Borghesia, pathbreaking for EBM. I won’t write now about Laibach and Borghesia, maybe later, in some other article. Here I want to focus on bands, you might not know yet: Melodrom, Silence, Torul and New Wave Syria. Read More →
