I am merely a music lover

“Polish Coldwave Journey” has the taste of a holiday adventure, but before everything else it is an important and unique documentary film about the contemporary Polish coldwave. The premiere of this film will be very soon. For this occasion I had a talk with the father of this idea – coming from Slovenia he is a blogger, music critic, musician, cultural anthropologist, a passionate lover of Polish coldwave – the list is endless… Get to know with me André Savetier!  Read More →

Skryabin / Скрябін

kuzma

A week ago I have been to L’viv, Ukraine, to visit my dear friends, who I did not see for a long time then. When I saw people gathering on the Shevchenko square lighting candles, I thought it had something to do with the war in the east of the country. Only later I found out that the legendary musician Andriy Kuzmenko, founding member and front-man of the band Skryabin, had died on February 2nd in a car accident in Dnipropetrovs’k. Wanting to contribute to the condolences I am going to introduce you to one of the best musical groups of Eastern Europe. Read More →

A Musical Review of 2014

review2014_intro

Almost exactly two years ago this page went online. To be honest, I didn’t know in which direction this whole thing would go, but shortly after it turned out that there IS an interest in what I am writing about. My readership is growing steadily and many musicians are writing to me to introduce and discuss their music. I want to thank you very much for your attention! 🙂

While Central Europe is covered with snow these days I fled the cold and am sitting now at a sunny beach in Bodrum, Turkey. Before enjoying the dolce vita too much I am compiling a musical review of 2014 for you.

For alternative/dark music 2014 was another great year.  Instead of the usual 10 songs I will present you 11 (because I couldn’t decide), which were released in 2014 – in no particular order. Read More →

An Alternative Christmas Playlist 2014

zmaj

Remember my last year’s alternative Christmas playlist? If you don’t, you can look it up here. The idea of this playlist was born out of the necessity to escape the so-called “Christmas songs”. They ambush the unaware and innocent individual, to manifest themselves in the brains of their hosts. Let’s see if I am able to find another ten songs which serve as an enjoyable and appropriate alternative to the generic Christmas songs. Read More →

XIII Wroclaw Industrial Festival

Wrocław Industrial Festival 2014

After an endless car ride we eventually arrived in Wrocław, the capital of Lower Silesia, Poland. Uncountable times I have spent here, made some dear friends and it appears that behind every street corner, below every tree I can find pieces of memories and stories of my personal history with this city. This time I came here because of the Wrocław Industrial Festival, organized this year already for the 13th time. Read More →

What happened to… Algebra Suicide?

algebrasuicide_intro

The late 70s and early 80s have been a fruitful time for the creation of interesting and creative music, which was generally categorized under terms as “new wave”, “darkwave” and “post-punk”. That makes it difficult to explain, what music and philosophy these genres represent. Those musicians saw that the music scene needed some innovation and that the early 80s were the right time for a change.

Algebra Suicide from Chicago achieved some reputation due to their unique musical style. The duo consisted of Lydia Tomkiw, daughter of Ukrainian immigrants, and Don Hedeker, and was active from 1982 to 1995. Read More →

A Musical Review of 2013

review2014

Another year is almost over, with all its highs and lows. Lou Reed and Nelson Mandela died, there’s a new pope, in Turkey and Ukraine people go on the streets to protest against their governments and Russia does everything to reload the Cold War. But enough about politics.

This page almost has its first birthday, the blog went online on January 2nd 2013. In the last year the page almost got 20.000 views and has an average of 53 visitors per day, which is a great outcome. I want to thank the musicians, artists and writers, who helped me make this project real, and, of course, my friends and readers for their interest, inspiration and support. savetier.eu is a non-profit site (maybe once I will place ads/banners somewhere, but for now I don’t know where they would fit and they are mostly ugly).

This year again I prepared a list of 10 great songs that were released in 2013. As always in no particular order. Read More →

An Alternative Christmas Playlist 2013

zmaj

Christmas is approaching and also some snow fell today. I appreciate neither nor. The most annoying thing on Christmas is not its superficiality, let alone the mindless consuming. No, you somehow can escape that – somehow. What bugs me even more is ‘Christmas music’. Fortunately, I am sitting now in a coffee-house, where some bright side of the 80’s is playing. Everything’s better than ‘Last Christmas’ and Bowie’s ‘Drummer Boy’. However, soon it is over.

I tried to make an alternative to the usual Christmas swamp. The following list consists of songs, which in my opinion would also hit the Xmas mood, without being pathetic. Read More →

1984 · Legendary Polish Coldwave

1984-why-not-Again I return to the topic of Polish new wave/coldwave. This time a legendary band, maybe my favourite among many amazing Polish bands, will be featured. It is called ‘Tysiąc dziewięćset osiemdziesiąt cztery‘. For non-native speakers of the Polish language this name might  be a little difficult to pronounce. It means 1984.

During their long history the band 1984 changed their sound several times, whereas the essence stayed the same. A potential explanation for that are the perpetual reformations of their line-up, co-founder Piotr Liszcz being the only constant in 1984, until today. Experimental use of guitar and bass, blended with a rebellious rage and musical audaciousness forms the voice of the 80’s in Poland.
